Privacy policy

Last updated 29 October 2026

This policy explains what the Showvee app and showvee.com collect, why, and what your choices are. The short version: your playlists and viewing stay on your device; we keep only what we need to run your account and activate your TVs. No ads, no tracking, no selling of data.

In the app

  • Stays on your device: your playlists, portal addresses, MAC addresses, usernames and passwords, settings and what you watch. Showvee connects directly to the sources you add; we never receive this data.
  • Adding a playlist from your phone (optional): if you choose “Use your phone” on the TV, the details you type on the showvee.com page are encrypted on your phone with a key that is part of the QR code on your TV and is never sent to us. showvee.com only passes the encrypted text on to your TV, can’t read it, and deletes it as soon as the TV has it (or 10 minutes after the code was shown, if it never arrives).
  • Sync (Premium): unless you turn it off, your favourites, watch history and where you stopped in movies and episodes are kept in step between the devices on your account through showvee.com. Each device first encrypts them with a key made from your playlist’s login (username and password, or portal and MAC), which never leaves your devices. So showvee.com holds only scrambled data it can’t read without that login. Turn it off in Settings › Premium › Sync or on your account page.
  • Update checks: copies installed from showvee.com ask showvee.com for the latest version. Like any web request this includes your IP address and the app version.
  • Activation: when you activate Premium with your phone, the app sends its Showvee device code (a salted one-way hash of your device’s Android ID, so the ID itself can’t be read from it; not your provider’s MAC), the device model, platform and app version, whether the copy came from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore or showvee.com, and a fingerprint of the app’s signature to check it’s an official copy. This works the same in copies from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore and showvee.com. While activated, the app checks in about once a week. From version 1.8, copies from showvee.com also send a one-way hash of the device’s DRM (Widevine) ID, used only so each TV gets one free trial.
  • Weather (optional): the clock and weather feature asks MET Norway (api.met.no) for the forecast of a city — the city of your time zone or one you choose. If you search for a place, the name is looked up with your device’s geocoder or OpenStreetMap Nominatim.
  • Online subtitles (optional): only when you choose “Find subtitles online” for a movie or episode, the app asks OpenSubtitles.com for subtitles. It sends the title, year or IMDb/TMDB number, the season and episode, and the languages you chose; like any web request this includes your IP address. If you sign in to OpenSubtitles in the app, your username and password go only to OpenSubtitles. showvee.com receives none of this. Subtitles you download are kept on your device. OpenSubtitles handles these requests under its own privacy policy.
  • Film and series details (on unless you turn it off): when a film or series page is missing its plot, cast, ratings or trailer, the app looks the title and year up at Wikidata and Wikipedia (films) or TVmaze (series, then Wikidata and Wikipedia when TVmaze doesn’t know the show), directly from your device; like any web request this includes your IP address. Search’s rating filter and order look up the titles a search finds (or the newest ones a filter lists) the same way, for their ratings only. Nothing about it goes to showvee.com. Turn it off in Settings › Playlists › Film and series details from the web.
  • Google Play copies: purchases are handled by Google Play under Google’s privacy policy.

On showvee.com

  • Account: your name, email address and a secure hash of your password (we can’t see your password), when you signed up and last signed in.
  • Licences and TVs: your plan, the TVs linked to it (device code, model, platform, app version, Google Play, Amazon Appstore or showvee.com copy, when linked and last seen).
  • Purchases: if you buy Premium on showvee.com, you pay on Stripe’s payment page. Stripe handles your card details under its own privacy policy; we never see or store them. We keep the order: its number, your email address, the plan, the amount, any tax or refund, the dates, and Stripe’s reference for the payment.
  • Free trial: if you start the free Premium trial on a TV, we record when it started and ends, the TV’s device code and model, the IP address it was started from, and two keyed one-way hashes: one of your email address and one of the TV’s DRM ID. They let each account and each TV have one trial, and can’t be turned back into the email address or the ID.
  • Synced data: the encrypted items above, fingerprints of each playlist and item (keyed hashes that don’t reveal them), whether each is a favourite or watched, when it changed, and which device synced last and when.
  • Security: your IP address is used briefly to limit sign-in attempts and abuse, and appears in server logs that are kept for a limited time. Important account events (such as activations and plan changes) are logged.
  • Email: we send emails you need — confirming your address, password resets, Premium updates, and now and then a notice about the service itself (a change to these pages, planned downtime). News and offers only if you say yes, when you sign up or on your account page; each one has an unsubscribe link, and you can say no again at any time. We keep a record of the emails our team sends you (who, when, the subject and text) with your account.
  • Support notes and codes: our team may add notes to your account, for example what you asked us and what we did. If you use a discount or free-Premium code, we record which code, when, and the order or plan it gave. If we suspend an account, we record why, who did it and when.
  • Google Play testers: if you join our testers group on Google Groups, Google shows us the name and email address of your Google account as a group member. We use them only to run the test, and you can leave the group at any time.
  • Cookies: one cookie keeps you signed in and protects forms. No analytics, advertising or third-party cookies.

Why we use it

To provide your account and Premium (our agreement with you), to keep the records tax and accounting law require for purchases (a legal obligation), and to keep Showvee secure and prevent abuse (our legitimate interest). We don’t sell or share your data with advertisers. Our hosting provider stores the data on our behalf.

How long we keep it

Account data is kept while you have an account. When you delete your account, your account, licences, TVs, our notes about it and the record of emails we sent you are deleted from our database straight away, and the codes you used no longer point to you; copies in our backups disappear as those roll over, within 90 days.

Purchase records are kept for 7 years for tax and accounting, also if you delete your account (they’re no longer linked to an account then). Payments that were started but never completed are deleted after 30 days.

What we keep: our security log of account events keeps IP addresses for 90 days. After an account is deleted, its log entries keep a masked email address and device codes for 30 days, then only what happened and when. Device codes from refused unofficial copies of the app are removed after 90 days, activation codes a day after they expire, codes for adding a playlist from your phone (with anything sent that the TV never collected) a day after they expire, and rate-limit records after two days.

Free trial records are kept for 2 years after the trial ends, also if you delete your account, so the same account or TV can’t start another trial. When you delete your account, its trial is unlinked from it straight away. The IP address a trial was started from is removed after 90 days.

Synced data is deleted with your account, when you delete it on your account page or in the app, and when none of your devices has synced for 6 months. We keep at most your newest 100 watched channels and 300 watched movies and episodes; a removed favourite or history entry is forgotten after 6 months.
